Tilcara is situated in the famous Quebrada de Humahuaca, ( Jujuy) declared Natural Heritage to Humanity by UNESCO in the year 2003. The town is surrounded by two rivers, Grande, that flows through the gorge from north to south, and the Huasamayo, from east to west, both of them dry during most of the year except on the short rainy season that begins in December.
From Tilcara, at about 2465 meters above sea level, you can enjoy a lunar landscape or it also seems to be a close view to a Marcian landscape. With strange rock formations and a lot of colors, the mountains surround the town whose origin is of more than 10,000 years ago, and protected, since diaguita`s times, by the Pucará (fortress) that dominates the valley.
The fauna, without being abundant, is characteristic and varied. There are vicunas, wild llama, foxes, vizcachas and ferrets. In the mountainous regions live condors, eagles, owls, quail, doves, and many other types of birds.
Considered as the Archaeological Capital of Jujuy , there is a Museum belonging to Tilcara Interdisciplinary Institute which is considered as one of the most important in this specialty.
Only a few kilometers away from the center of the region, you can visit Pucará - meaning fortress- which has been built by the original inhabitants of Humahuaca Quebrada on both polychromatic hillocks.
Four trax excursions to Morado Hill, driving accross huge salt lakes, hiking, horse riding or even sandboarding in the surrounding dunes are some of the activities you can enjoy in the region.
