San Juan - Argentina

Located to the north of Mendoza province, San Juan exhibits green oases, colourful valleys, imposing mountains, fauna reserves, archaeological reserves, thermal waters, torrential rivers and important dams. San Juan city is 169 km from Mendoza and 1140 km from Buenos Aires. It is one of the oldest cities of the country, with deep historic roots.

It was totally rebuilt after the earthquake of 1944. It possesses wide and monumental avenues, buildings with earthquake-proof constructions, numberless squares and public places. Therefore, San Juan, leaning over the high Andean Mountain Range, offers a spectacular vision of its montaineous landscape, and together with the beauty of its valleys make of this province one of the most appealing ones for the tourist.

In the outskirts of the city, there are some interesting tourist attractions. The Ignacio de la Roza dam is essential for the irrigation system of the area and is surrounded by the Fauna Park and the Hydrological Institute. A little further stands the Ullum Reservoir. Located in one of the most interesting valleys, this artificial lake has turned into one of the main attractions for both local people and visitors. It is a place apt for fishing and nautical sports.

Towards the east of the province stands Valle Fertil, one of the most beautiful and picturesque departments of the province, with a lovely landscape of sierras and geologically famous Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley) and Talampaya Canyon.
