Arequipa has been described as the most beautiful city in South America. It has a stunning main plaza and the buildings are constructed from the white local volcanic rock. Arequipa is the second largest city in Perú and has a superb climate with almost 300-days of sun and blue skies per year. The city has a lovely atmosphere: it’s not too big; it’s not too touristy; and it displays a great mix between modern Perú and the traditional campesino lifestyle.
There are loads of adventurous things to get out and do here like white water rafting, mountain biking and motorcycling. There’s the amazing Colca Canyon to visit, which is the main trekking destination and at 3191m deep it is the deepest canyon in the world and the place where you’ve most chance of spotting Condors. If you’re feeling really adventurous there are the volcanoes of El Misti (5822m) and Chachani (6075m) to climb.
In the city centre there’s Juanita, the world famous Ice Princess who was sacrificed and discovered 500-years later on the summit of the Mt. Ampato volcano. She has been well preserved in the ice and is on display for all to see. And there’s Santa Catalina, the huge convent, which will easily consume a couple of hours.
It’s not all hard work and sightseeing though. Nowadays, Arequipa has its fair share of decent bars, nightclubs & restaurants to choose from, so you can chill-out, get fed, get drunk & see where the night takes you. The earth might even move for you too!
